IT takes more than 22 engineering projects to get ICIF visitors involved in some of the most visually spectacular scenes of the Oscar-winning film, “Life of Pi.”

In a room of more than 100 square meters in Hall 1 of the ICIF’s main venue, Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, five screens surround visitors and present moving 3D images of the ocean in golden sunlight, under starry skies and amid roaring waves, depicting breathtaking scenes from the film.

“I feel like I’m on an adventure like the film’s protagonist, Pi,” a visitor surnamed Huang told Shenzhen Daily on Saturday.

Visitors like Huang found it hard to distinguish reality from the virtual world thanks to the interactive display’s advanced visual and sound effects.

“The spectacular scene reproduction is a combination of projectors, software and 3D technology,” said Xie Jing, CEO of Shenzhen ACTO Digital Video Technology Co., (ACTO), which developed the projectors.

Based in Nanshan District, Shenzhen, ACTO specializes in research and development related to digital video technology products, along with manufacturing and sales.

After taking pictures of his son surrounded by the amazing ocean scenery, Huang said he hadn’t realized Chinese enterprises were able to create such wonderful film scenes.

“I thought only Western filmmakers could do it. However, now that technology is not a problem anymore, I think our filmmakers should try to tell better stories,” said Huang, who said he is a big fan of blockbuster films such as “Avatar” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
